Sonia Burgos
Hi! I am Sonia Burgos, a Provisionally Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Life has this way of placing the world’s weight on a person’s shoulders. Individuals cope by not focusing on the “weight,” trying to find a way to make it go away or trying to numb the pain from bearing the weight. No matter how hard we try to push through and carry this “weight,” it becomes so unbearable that it affects the individual and their relationships. In therapy, we will explore ways to manage the weight on your shoulders and the roadblocks you encounter on your path so that you can live the life you want. As I focus on an individual’s needs, I am also interested in how that individual connects with the world around them and how the world connects with them. I have a variety of therapeutic experiences including outpatient, school-based, and hospital settings. I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, self-esteem struggles, couples concerns and family challenges. I am trained in various therapeutic models, such as solution-focused brief therapy, narrative therapy, and person-centered therapy.
I served several years in the U.S. military; with a specific career path I had confidently planned. Then, an accident happened that left me living with chronic pain. Over time, with the healing process, I was faced with the decision of how I would redirect and repurpose my life outside of the military. I had to reauthor my life, which was challenging and significant. I noticed through many of life’s challenges that I was seeking so much meaning and understanding of myself and others. I became a therapist to understand some of life’s meanings and to help others became my new purpose. Part of the reason for me being a therapist is to help you use a pen or crayon to reauthor and create a new meaning in your life story.
During our sessions, you can expect a compassionate and nonjudgemental environment that is all about you. It is a moment in your life when you can have a safe space to explore and freely express your thoughts and emotions, connect to yourself, and find your meaning. I hope you feel supported, challenged, and inspired and that the “weight of the world” is a little lighter during our time together.
I hold a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Keiser University as well as a master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2024 from Nova Southeastern University. I am a Provisionally Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working towards state licensure while furthering my education in the Couple and Family Therapy doctoral program at Nova Southeastern University.
My training consists of working with a variety of clients in a multitude of settings. I have worked with children and adolescents in the school setting who have behaved in non-violent infractions that had the potential to be considered in the juvenile justice system. Apart from juvenile behaviors, at the core of these children and adolescents, there were self-esteem struggles, anger, anxiety, depression, family-life challenges, developmental issues and/ or substance use. I have facilitated therapeutic group sessions in a hospital setting with adults, ranging from young adults to the elderly, who were living with anger, anxiety, depression, substance use, trauma, mental disorders, and homelessness. I also worked in an outpatient therapy center where I met with individuals, couples, and families dealing with the range of difficulties that people find themselves encountering. In all of these settings, my main goal was to help people to figure out what their preferred future was and to begin living it. I hope to be able to take this journey with you as well.
